Newcastle math-pop band Long Island Sound writes songs that contain the ferver of youth, tempered with nerdy intelligence. Their angular math-pop, which combines mixed meters and vocal harmonies, bridges the gap between lo-fi indie pop and instrumental experimental rock. Optimistic and joyous, it’s music that greets you like the morning sun at the end of a long winter night.
It is a sound that has captured the attention of national broadcaster Triple J who in March 2011 announced Long Island Sound as the winner of the Unearthed Groovin’ The Moo competition.
The Unearthed win saw the band bring their sleepy riffery and often barbershop-esque harmonies to the sold out festival in May, alongside acts like The Go! Team, The Wombats and previous Unearthed winners Art Vs Science.
Long Island Sound have also just released their debut self-titled EP. Featuring the single Animal House, the EP was recorded in 2010 by Sydney producer Dave Hammer, who has recently worked with local indie bands Snowdroppers, Pockets and Le Kingste.
Comprised of singer/guitarist Andy Woodward, singer/guitarist/keyboard player Chris Lawrence, bass player Mitch Elliott and drummer Sean Cook, the members of Long Island Sound met at high school, but did not start making music together until 2009.
The band draws on musical influences as diverse as Foals, Battles, Animal Collective and Maps and Atlases, and in the last 12 months Long Island Sound have performed alongside Cloud Control, The Seabellies, Richard in your Mind, Last Dinosaurs, Papa Vs Pretty, Guineafowl and Oh Ye Denver Birds.
With a new EP under their belts, and an Unearthed win to mark the occasion, keep your ears peeled to hear the Long Island Sound....More

“5/5. If Weezer did mathrock it would sound like this. Melodic, harmonic, driving, energetic, epic, poptastic.”
